PYROCLASTS – Single cask whisky

One of the two first whiskies ever bottled at Tempel. It is made with ~70% of our own peat smoked malt, custom made in collaboration with Mångsbo Maltverk located just outside Uppsala, Sweden. The malting- and smoking method was “heavily inspired” by the Swedish whisky pioneers Mackmyra, who gracefully shared their malt smoking methods and equipment. Mångsbo-Mårten then went home and built his own smoker (a tad smaller than the original, but the design was generally the same) and started with the trials. The first few trial batches aside, the malt has been great, and probably the smokiest malt I have tasted.

The whisky is bottled at cask strength, 56,7%, as it was a bit too smooth to be needing a lower abv. As is it grotesquely smokey, we felt that this is a nice start of things to come. It is aged on bourbon barrel, ABA size (~190 L) for roughly 3 years. This is a fairly young product, yet surprisingly ripe for its modest age. It is only available for purchase on site.

The name derives from a song with Sunn o)))

LEADEN WINGS – Single cask whisky

Second of the two first whiskies ever bottled at Tempel. This too is smoked, but on the other side of the spectrum. The main component is plain light malt, with a few handfuls of Viking’s Lightly Peated malt. The smoked malts adds a complexity to the whisky without being at the front line by any means. This is a more complex whisky that needs a good while to consume to fully experience it. Is is aged for about 4,5 years on bourbon barrel, 190 L.

The added years compared to PYROCLASTS is noticeable in the complexity, and the way that the whisky grows in the glass when poured. It is bottled at 53% (but aged at 61,1%).

Namewise – this is mostly in the eye of the beholder. True wings can be heavy to bear, wings that looks perfectly fine may only be for show, wings can be casted from the darkest materials, wings formed with wrongful material selection might be useless. Feel free to pick one, or share your own interpretation.
